Exporting from LibKey or BrowZine to various citation managers

LibKey

The LibKey.io page doesn’t offer a quick export citation feature like BrowZine, but once a full text format option is selected (ex. ‘Article Link’ or ‘Download PDF’) you can often use the browser plugin for your citation manager to capture the metadata of the article page you’re viewing.

Zotero

Expand
titleZotero and BrowZine Web's export citation feature

One of the advantages of using BrowZine’s Export Citation feature is that no additional proxy configuration is required in Zotero because a BrowZine URL is included with the article’s citation details. The BrowZine URL will inherit any authentication settings that we have on file (ex. EZProxy, OpenAthens URL, IP/VPN authentication only, and more) for the institution. That means that if a user exports a citation from BrowZine into their Zotero library and they want to revisit the article later, they can double-click on the article title from their Zotero Web or Zotero Desktop app library and quickly connect to it in their organization’s library collections and *login with their institutional credentials if needed.

Note: Open access items don’t require a login and will connect directly.

If you expand the “Info” panel for the selected title in your Zotero library to view and/or edit the citation details, the BrowZine URL may look like this:

Code Block
https://browzine.com/articles/########

Info

Pro-tip: If you need to find the article through a different institution, open the BrowZine article link in a private or incognito browser window. That will give you a chance to choose a new institution/library.

Configuration: Using LibKey as a link resolver in citation managers or to retrieve PDFs

Although LibKey is used as a link resolver in many popular databases and sites, it is not able to capture PDFs using a citation manager’s ‘find full text’ or ‘get PDF’ features. Manually attaching PDF files would be needed.

Q: In BrowZine when I click the citation export button there are several options. Do I only export the Citavi RIS? Or can I use some of these other options too?

A: While the Citavi RIS export is recommended, Citavi can import a variety of other formats too. So if you exported a file through one of the other RIS options or even for other citation managers, Citavi has other format filters available for selection if needed.

Info

Tip: Once added to your Citavi library project, you can add another URL to a selected reference by selecting the entry, click the paperclip icon for “Attachments/URLs” and add the http://LibKey.io URL as an online address. Or you can manually modify the online address field of the record details so the https://libkey.io/libraries/{Library_ID}/{article_doi} appears, if desired, as a way to easily access the article again.
