Exporting from LibKey or BrowZine to various citation managers
LibKey
The LibKey.io page doesn’t offer a quick export citation feature like BrowZine, but once a full text format option is selected (ex. ‘Article Link’ or ‘Download PDF’) you can often use the browser plugin for your citation manager to capture the metadata of the article page you’re viewing.
Zotero plugin: Zotero Connector
Mendeley plugin: Mendeley Web Importer
RefWorks: RefWorks bookmarklet
EndNote: EndNote Click
Citavi: Citavi Picker
BrowZine
Click to expand for more details.
Zotero
Zotero and BrowZine Web's export citation feature
One of the advantages of using BrowZine’s Export Citation feature is that no additional proxy configuration is required in Zotero because a BrowZine URL is included with the article’s citation details. The BrowZine URL will inherit any authentication settings that we have on file (ex. EZProxy, OpenAthens URL, IP/VPN authentication only, and more) for the institution. That means that if a user exports a citation from BrowZine into their Zotero library and they want to revisit the article later, they can double-click on the article title from their Zotero Web or Zotero Desktop app library and quickly connect to it in their organization’s library collections and *login with their institutional credentials if needed.
Note: Open access items don’t require a login and will connect directly.
If you expand the “Info” panel for the selected title in your Zotero library to view and/or edit the citation details, the BrowZine URL may look like this:
https://browzine.com/articles/########

For the selected article, click the Export Citation feature and select BibTex. In a moment, a BIB file should automatically download to your device.
In the BIB file, the BrowZine article URL value will appear in the url field.
BrowZine App and BibTex
BibTex is not currently included as one of the exportable file types or tools in the BrowZine app. Instead, you could save the article either by downloading it or by adding it to the “My Articles” area of your individual BrowZine account. Access your account through the BrowZine Web interface instead, and there will be a citation export option available for BibTex.

BrowZine Web
For the selected article, click the Export Citation feature and select Endnote RIS. That will initiate an RIS file download. (Check your Downloads folder or other designated folder).
If using the EndNote Desktop application (ex. EndNote 21):
Open the application, navigate to the File menu and select Import.
Select the recently imported #####.RIS file
If using the EndNote Web (ex. EndNote basic):
Login to EndNote Web, navigate the Collect menu to select Import References.
Browse for the file.
For the Import Option, Refman RIS is recommended.
If you want this sorted into a specific folder or group, make that selection from the list of options for the 'To' field. Otherwise, select Import when ready.
A message will appear to confirm the import when successful.
When the “My References” area is accessed, the BrowZine article link will be automatically listed as the “Go To URL” so it’s easy to access again later if needed.
BrowZine App and EndNote

For the selected article, click the Export Citation feature and select Citavi RIS. That will initiate an RIS file download. (Check your Downloads folder or other designated folder).
If using the Citavi Web:
Login to Citavi Web, create a new project or open as needed.
Click the plus sign to “Import references or create manually“ under All References.
For the Import Reference, Text file (RIS, BibTeX, etc.) is recommended. There are a variety of import format filters to explore if you’re importing from other reference managers, but for BrowZine’s RIS file the default “Common filters (RIS, BibTex, and ENW)” option is sufficient.
Use the “Search” option to browse for the RIS file or use the text file drag and drop options as desired. A message will appear to confirm the import when successful.
When a record from the “All References” area of a project! is accessed, the BrowZine article link will be automatically listed as the “Online address” field. Click to open this URL in a new window or tab if you need to revisit the article.
BrowZine App with Citavi
Citavi is not currently included as one of the bibliographic manager tools in the BrowZine app. Instead, you could save the article either by downloading it or by adding it to the “My Articles” area of your individual BrowZine account. Access your account through the BrowZine Web interface instead, and there will be a citation export option available for Citavi.
Configuration: Using LibKey as a link resolver in citation managers or to retrieve PDFs
Although LibKey is used as a link resolver in many popular databases and sites, it is not able to capture PDFs using a citation manager’s ‘find full text’ or ‘get PDF’ features. Manually attaching PDF files would be needed.
Zotero
Q: How to PDFs attach to items in the Zotero library?
A: If the PDF is already downloaded, you can manually “Add Attachment” to any item in your Zotero library. Otherwise, Zotero offers a “Find Available PDF” option that will look for a PDF file to download. How this functions will depend on your connection.
Zotero will load the page associated with the item’s DOI or URL and try to find a PDF to download before looking for OA copies. This will work if you have direct or VPN-based access to the PDF. If you use a web-based proxy, only open-access PDFs will be automatically retrieved using this new functionality, but you can continue to save items with gated PDFs from the browser using the Zotero Connector.
Q: Does the proxy need to be configured in the Zotero settings to access BrowZine or LibKey resources?
A: No; BrowZine and LibKey links should not be proxied.
Q: Can LibKey be added as a link resolver in Zotero to automatically retrieve PDFs?
A: Although LibKey is used as a link resolver in many popular databases and sites, it's not designed to function in Zotero (app or plugin) as a way to capture PDFs. Zotero will often try to act as a PDF resolver to grab an available PDF right away, but our services point to resources in a different way. Generally speaking, you won’t be able to use https://libkey.io/libraries/{libraryID}/openurl as a custom link resolver if your library uses EZProxy, OpenAthens, or other web-based remote authentication service that requires a login to provide access. For IP-based or VPN users, it might work because there’s no additional login input required.
Mendeley
Q: How to PDFs attach to items in the Mendeley library?
A: If the PDF is already downloaded, you can manually “Add Files” to any item in your Mendeley library. Otherwise, the Mendeley Web Importer browser add-on will try to offer a PDF when you’re viewing the article. A “View PDF” option will appear (either in the Web Importer’s window or as a floating browser extension) along with an “+ Add to Library” button if one is available.
Q: Does the proxy need to be configured in the Mendeley settings to access BrowZine or LibKey resources?
A: No, Mendeley doesn’t offer this option and BrowZine and LibKey links should not be proxied.
Q: Can LibKey be added as a link resolver in Mendeley to automatically retrieve PDFs?
A: No, there’s no option in Mendeley to configure this.
RefWorks
The LibKey.io interstitial page doesn’t offer a quick export citation feature like BrowZine, but once a full text format option is selected (ex. ‘Article Link’ or ‘Download PDF’) you can use the RefWorks bookmarklet to capture the metadata of the source page.
Please consult your style guide when exporting and formatting citations.
EndNote
Q: Does the proxy need to be configured in the EndNote settings to access BrowZine or LibKey resources?
A: No; BrowZine and LibKey links should not be proxied.
Q: Can LibKey be added as a link resolver in EndNote’s “Find Full Text” feature to automatically retrieve PDFs? What if I enter https://libkey.io/libraries/{LibraryID}/openurl
into the OpenURL Path?
A: Although LibKey is used as a link resolver in many popular databases and sites, it's not able to capture PDFs using EndNote’s full text feature. Manually attaching PDF files would be needed.
In the Find Full Text settings, consider enabling the following options to quickly grab PDFs that are openly available:
Citavi
Q: In BrowZine when I click the citation export button there are several options. Do I only export the Citavi RIS? Or can I use some of these other options too?
A: While the Citavi RIS export is recommended, Citavi can import a variety of other formats too. So if you exported a file through one of the other RIS options or even for other citation managers, Citavi has other format filters available for selection if needed.
Please consult your style guide when exporting and formatting citations.
